John 12:3 NLT | “Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from the essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with fragrance.”
While Martha was stuck in “service” that Jesus didn’t care much about, Mary was seen in the above scripture making spiritual sacrifices celebrated by the same Jesus.(John 12:7-8) How was Mary able to consistently win the Lord’s approval? She emptied herself of her own ideas about what the Lord wanted, and sought to find out what He preferred. (Luke 10:39)
So, while Martha assumed that the Lord wanted good food and entertainment, Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to hear Him for herself and find out what the Lord will have her do. Child of God, to transcend your humanity and be like Jesus in every way, you have to realize it’s not about you. It’s about the Lord and what He will have you do.
Like David, Mary set the Lord always before her, sensitive to His preferences for her.(Psalm 16:8) Receive grace today to abandon your ideas of what the Lord wants and actually find out what He prefers. Bliss be with you.
