Very recently, during one of our worship services, I asked people who have deliberately adopted God as their own personal God to step out. Then I asked those who didn’t to come forward to take their things and go home. Nobody moved. I was stunned. That no one took their bags and bibles to go shocked me to the bones; but it reinforced an important lesson: We all want to please God, and be at peace with Him. The Holy Spirit later told me, "That is the desire for God."
You may not be aware of it, but your greatest desire is for God. In His wisdom, God designed the hunger for Him into your being. He built eternity into you as the verse below tells us:
"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end." ~Ecclesiastes 3:11
Eternity refers to a hunger so deep and vast within the core of your being that only God could satisfy. Nothing else can satisfy you. Deep in your heart, as God’s child, you want Him more than you want money or marriage. Deep down, you perceive His power and know that when you are at peace with Him, you are ok; and when you are not, nothing else matters.
The love of God is healthy. Strengthen that love. Develop it. Build upon it. How? Honour God. When you honour God, your fear and love for Him grows; your heart grows in affection for Him and you tend increasingly towards oneness with Him.
The most powerful way to honor God is not with your words, your songs, or your good intentions. It is with your wealth, with those things that matter the most to you. To honor God means to put Him first in your priorities, in your spending, in your budgeting, in your relationships, in your values. It is never easy or convenient to honour God. Mere words are cheap, but your time and your wealth are not cheap. When you give up those things that matter the most to you for God, when you go out of your way to please Him, when you put yourself through inconveniences and severe sacrifices for Him, there is no better way to honour God.
This is wisdom: "Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;" ~ Proverbs 3:9
Cultivate the habit of giving your best and first to God.
