Shining In A Doomed And Fading World

1 John 2:15-17 NLT
[15] Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. [16] For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. [17] And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

Note the things in the world:

  1. Craving for physical pleasure.
  2. Craving for everything we see.
  3. Pride in our achievements and possessions.

But also note that this world is fading away, along with everything in it that people crave.

A young man recently approached me after service to tell me about an ambitious project he is undertaking. He is attempting to raise millions of Naira for a real estate venture.

During the conversation, he told me he was doing this to glorify God. Unfortunately, when he said that, it sounded really ridiculous to me.

So I asked him:

“Have you ever taken a look at this planet we live in? The mountains, rivers, oceans and so on?

“Do you have any idea the size of a star and how many hundreds of billions there are?”

“Have you ever seen some of the beasts that dwell in the depths of the ocean?”

“And do you seriously think the Person that created all that will be impressed by a few pathetic blocks of worthless bricks and concrete?

Well, the young man just stared back at me like a zombie. I guess he wasn’t expecting me to respond as I did.

But such is what happens when we fall in love with the world and the things that are in the world. Then we become stupid and start thinking that the Creator of this Universe can be impressed by the size of our building and the cost of our cars; by our pitifully microscopic ‘achievements’.

And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

I lay down a challenge today for all Blissful People everywhere:

First of all, become established in the inevitable fact that this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. This world is not our home. We’re just passing through, and one day we’ll be gone from here.

Secondly, during your temporary passage through this doomed and fading world, focus all of your energy and time in nurturing an intimate, trusting and loyal relationship with the Holy Spirit.
