1 Corinthians 13:12 | NIV “Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
When the light in a place is poor or dim, we cannot clearly distinguish between things. In the same way, when our light or awareness of God is low, there is the tendency for us to be misguided.
Recall the temptation of Eve in the garden of Eden. God had made them in His image and likeness. But because she lacked the awareness of who God made her to be, or perhaps failed to retain that knowledge, the enemy swayed her with his words.
Genesis 3:5 | NIV “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
When our light is poor, we can be misled, even by the scriptures. We read that the devil came with the scriptures to tempt and lure Jesus out of God’s will, after his fast in the wilderness. But unlike Eve, Jesus is the Light Himself, and was aware of that. Everything lays bare before Him, so, he could see right through the devil, and put him where he belonged instead.
Moses gave Israel the scripture that permitted them to divorce, once it was done legally, but when Jesus came, He brought a higher dimension of light to the matter.
Mathew 19:8-9 | NIV “Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
All scripture is said to be God-breathed. Holy men of God spoke as the Spirit moved them. However, not all scripture is the word of Christ. The words of men and that of the devil are also contained in the scriptures. This is why the guidance of the Holy Spirit is very key. His word to us today trumps what was written, or what He told us yesterday. And this is why ‘the letter kills.”
The Holy Spirit provides us with the lamp for our feet, which is the truth that we need per time. That way, we’ll never walk in error if we keep in step with Him. It is His desire that we grow in our awareness of Him, and in the knowledge of His will for our lives. This happens by our moment by moment, and day to day obedience, to the simplest of His word. May we receive the grace afresh today to keep in step with Him.
Galatians 5:25 | NIV “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
