Some people think that if ‘things are working’ it’s a sure proof that God is pleased.
Is this true?
What is the conclusive evidence, in this world, that a person is in right standing with God? Is it possible to know here, or can we just hope our guesses are right? Are there any conclusive signs in this world that a person is especially approved of God; something that would never be otherwise? Is there something that only happens in the lives of those approved by God, that never ever happens in the lives of those not approved?
The following passage is very interesting.
2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I had nearly lost my foothold.
3 For I envied the arrogant
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 They have no struggles;
their bodies are healthy and strong.
5 They are free from the burdens common to man;
they are not plagued by human ills.
~ Psalm 73:2-5
I’ve discovered that it’s quite difficult for religious minds to appreciate the fact that neither wealth nor health represents conclusive evidence that God is pleased with an individual. Most religious folks prefer the rather simplistic paradigm: If it is ‘working’, God must be in it; if not, then he is not. Thus, they evaluate their standing with God on the basis of their physical circumstances.
