Luke 4:16 | NKJV “So He came to Nazareth, where He has been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.”
When something is done long enough, it moves from being a habit, to a custom, and then a life style. The secrets of great men are said to be hidden in their daily routines; in their customs.
Jesus has the custom of surrendering to the will of His Father.
Going to the synagogue on a sabbath day to preach, like we see from today’s text, and whatever else that Jesus did, all derive from His custom of submission to the will of His Father. He never did anything apart from Him.
We can see Him testify here:
John 5:19 | “The Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing.”
And again in:
John 12:50 | “Whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”
This is what worship is about. It is absolute surrender to the will of God. It was the custom of Jesus.
One of my favourite gospel music group bears the name, “Jesus Culture.” Their name implies that they submit to and adopt the lifestyle and the ways of Jesus, as opposed to the culture of the world around them.
So, what custom do you subscribe to? What are you giving yourself to?
Is it the routine check on all your social media handles, first and last thing for the day, to keep up with the latest gist? Or the morning and the evening workouts? Or your daily dieting combined with water therapy? Or worry and anxiety over those seeming hopeless situations? Or some bunch of unnecessary religious activities?
God sees and knows where we all are. We make less of His power in our lives each time we let the custom of this world dominate and rule over us, instead of His.
That’s why Jesus encourages us to “learn of Him.” We are to embrace His custom of worship, and adopt His lifestyle of submission to the will and ways of God. From there will every of His will for us gracefully flow to us.
May we receive the same grace as Jesus to shun the world, make worship our custom, and surrender to the Holy Spirit, a lifestyle. Amen!
